COMFY TOURING ON 37-INCH MUDDIES

The Nissan Patrol is an absolute cult classic in Australia across all of its variants but few could deny that the GU is the pick of the bunch, offering a high level of refinement as one of the later iterations while maintaining the Patrol’s position at the pinnacle of stock or modified off-road performance potential.

Luke Hobson is but one in a legion of Nissan Patrol nuts but it’s pretty easy to see that his GU is anything but run-of-the-mill, with some serious suspension and a carefully-considered touring setup allowing him to rack up the kilometres in comfort before hitting the tough stuff, all on a set of 37x12.50R17 Trail Grappler M/Ts.

“I’ve had a lot of tyres in my time and the Nitto Trail Grappler M/Ts have been the best by far,” Luke exclaims, “so I have no plans of going back to anything else!”

“They’re both my daily and weekend tyre and I’ve never had them let me down, from wearing evenly on the black top to getting up comp truck tracks like 6 Stage in Yalwal or Hells Hill at Watagans.”

“I do enough touring to need a service almost every month and they’re very quiet, with enough life left at the 80,000km mark to see me through for the next few months when I’ll replace them with another set for Cape York!”

There’s no denying that the Trail Grappler M/T is an absolute beast in the bush but the fact that serious 4WDers like Luke can comfortably use a mud-terrain tyre for touring as a result of their relatively long life and sealed road performance makes switching sets to get serious a thing of the past.
